Generative AI in the Wild Class
In January of 2023, shortly after the public release of ChatGPT 3.5, we proposed a course called “Generative AI in the Wild.” We had very little idea what the class would look like and how we would teach it, but we knew that it was essential to start teaching such courses if our students were going to graduate with the skills needed to lead in the emerging world.
In September of 2025, we published an article about the evolution of the course in Technology and Society Magazine (Forthcoming), Two Years "in the Wild": A Multidisciplinary Approach to Teaching Generative AI.
This webpage provides more detail as to the course description, learning outcomes, assignments, and the broader goals, context, and impacts of the course.
Course Description: Generative AI is a form of computing in which computer systems generate media of text, images, sound, video, or combinations based on prompts or other information provided to the computer. These systems, including, but not limited to, ChatGPT, Midjourney & DALLE, have been evolving rapidly and have led to extreme excitement, confusion, and fear. This course provides a survey of how to understand and use a number of these tools including explorations in prompt engineering. The class will address a range of issues from across the liberal arts including artistic, economic, social/psychological, environmental, educational, and legal concerns and opportunities.
