David Smiley
Assistant Teaching Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Minor in Data Science
Biography
David Smiley is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Technology and Digital Studies Program at the University of Notre Dame, where he also serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Minor in Data Science. His academic work centers on applying machine learning and large language models to ancient languages and theological texts.
David brings a rich interdisciplinary background to Notre Dame, with previous roles as a data scientist at the Mendoza College of Business, lead instructor in Hebrew at Biblingo, and adjunct professor in biblical studies at North Central University.
He is currently working on his PhD with the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the Vrije University in Amsterdam. His dissertation employs machine learning algorithms to discover new discourse level grammatical features in biblical Hebrew poetry.

David earned his M.S. in Data Science and M.T.S. in Biblical Studies from the University of Notre Dame, and his M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He holds a B.A. in Biblical Studies from North Central University.
